Abstract
This research aims at discussing the influence of foreign trade
upon the consumption of sugar in Egypt and also measuring this on the
consumer price, as well as, the effective factors on the quantity of imports.
The research has depended on several tools and different analytic methods.
In addition. the research has mainly relied on the data published in the
different ministries.
It has become clear from the research that the production of
sugar in the world reached 144.1 million tons as an average of 2004 and
2005. Brazil achieved the highest rate of sugar production in the world where
its production of sugar amounted about 19.1% in comparison with Egypt
which its production of sugar is almost 1% only. The world prices of sugar
increased and reached the highest rate in 2005. As it was obvious that the
most important factors affected the price of the consumer are the quantity of
imports, the local production and the number of population while it was clear
that the most important agents affected the quantity of imports are the
number of population and the quantity of the local production. as well as, the
price of the real retail.
The research has come to several results. The most important
one is the rise of retail prices of sugar due to the uprising of the exchange
rate. As the average of the individual's quota oscillated from 25 kg to 33 kg
per year during the period 1990-2005. Also, it was clear that the rate of self-
sufficiency could be increased from 69.1 to almost 36.1% by the full operating
of sugar factories with adding the production of sugar came factory in Aswan
and the factory of sugar beet in the Nabarya, as well as, the expansion of
other sugar crops (the sweeteners equal to sugar).
